How long would it take to be able to Bench Press the Sun?
1.989 × 10^30kg isn't ego lifting, right?
I like to think I’m a diligent maths student, and so as a bit of fun, I decided to calculate how long it might take me to build enough strength to be able to bench press the Sun.
Now, to begin with, we must address the best part of any modelling problem; the assumptions!
We assume that my rate of progress in strength will be the same (which it isn’t), that the Sun can be nicely divided into non-5600°C plates and be popped onto a 20kg barbell (and that the bar won’t snap from the force), that I have an infinite lifespan and my physical ability will not decline over time, and, of course, that air resistance is negligible.
As of present, my rate of progress in on flat bench is a 5kg increase per week. I train it twice a week, so that’s two 1.25kg plates added each session. We’re going to assume that stays the same until the end of time, and so I’m supposedly adding on 260kg/year.
The sun weighs 1.989 × 10^30kg - or, 1,989,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000kg since standard form doesn’t quite do it justice. That’s about 333,000 Earths.
Assuming this is a 1RM, which currently stands at 65kg, we can model this with the following equation:
Where m represents my 1RM strength, and t represents time in years.
Using this very simple linear equation, we can calculate that for an m value of 1.989 × 10^30kg:
It’d take me 7560 septillion years.
For reference, the universe has only existed for 13.7 billion years, which is so pathetic that I couldn’t even get it to come up on a graph together as a sense of scale.
I can’t really scale it; It would take 558,394,160,583,941,600 universes (to present) for me to achieve this PB. I tried to get a website to visualise this but, to my surprise, it crashed when I put that number in.
So, the conclusion of this?
I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon, I’m afraid.
Thanks for reading this. I hope it’s adequately satisfied your curiosity.
If there’s anyone better at maths than me (very likely) and I’ve made a power of ten error or something, or has a way of making the information actually understandable to the human brain, please let me know in the comments.
I promise I post some good content, so if you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to the blog to get yourself a set of 6 free workout routines, and my YouTube channel. I post content like this every week, with a new video and blog post on fitness and bodybuilding, philosophy, mindset and anything else self-improvement.
And for returning readers, I’m sorry about the inconsistency of these posts. Doing the whole YouTube shabang is super time consuming and is what I’m going to put most of my time and effort into, since it’s getting me good results! I’ll pop out another content update soon.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you back here soon!
